As of 26 February 1996, over 16,500 UNITA soldiers are quartered at the four sites. In all four QAs, soldiers continue to benefit from the comprehensive humanitarian programme which includes food, access to basic health services and training on civic values incluing literacy, human rights and national reconciliation.

Preliminary Information on Registered Soldiers: The registration of UNITA soldiers during the quartering phase of the demobilization and reintegration process in Angola is signficant in both the formal set of identification and registration of soldiers in the quartering areas and in the long-term planning for programs in suport of their social and economic reintegration.

As relief agencies wait for the final results of ongoing corp assessments in various parts of the country, preliminary indications seem to indicate the rise of multiple pocket malnutrition areas in lieu of a general food emergency. Meanwhile, increased overland access has led humanitarian organizations to improve relief operations in northern Huila.

Relief activities continue in accessible areas of the country. With the gradual rehabilitation of roads and bridges, overland transport of relief items by WFP averages 60 per cent. Relief agencies operating in Angoa's countryside continue efforts to assess current harvest prospects as a basis for future assistance, primarily in food aid.

While insufficient rains to date could threaten maize crops sown in provinces along Angola's coast, reasonable harvests, mainly sorghum are expected in other areas of the country. Simultaneously, overland access for humanitarian convoys continues to increase.
