Relief activities continue in accessible areas of the country. With the gradual rehabilitation of roads and bridges, overland transport of relief items by WFP averages 60 per cent. Relief agencies operating in Angoa's countryside continue efforts to assess current harvest prospects as a basis for future assistance, primarily in food aid.

While insufficient rains to date could threaten maize crops sown in provinces along Angola's coast, reasonable harvests, mainly sorghum are expected in other areas of the country. Simultaneously, overland access for humanitarian convoys continues to increase.

Contrary to the prevailing tension visible during mid-December 1995 which led most relief operations to a standstill, the reporting period signals the successful resumption of relief activities in the Angolan countryside. As secuirty risks decline, WFP restarts humanitarian convoys to the northern areas, including Quibaxe, Negage, Uige, N'Dalatando, Cacuso and Malange.
