Clashes in Luanda Norte province has resulted in an influx of IPDs ot the towns of Andrada, Maludi and other locations in Luanda Norte yet to be assessed by humanitarian agencies. Demobilization continues in the northern region with over 18,000 demobilized to date. Halo Trust continues to demine areas in Bie and Huambo.

The Selection and Demobilization Centre of Quibala in Kuanza Sul Province is closed on 24 May as the first phase of demobilization moves ahead. The Military War Disabled Special Centre Bonga in Huambo province is also closed on 17 May. By 3 June almost 10,000 ex-FMU troops were demobilized.

The Joint Commission announced the commencement of Rapid Demobilization as soon as all preparations are in place, including transport, food, demobilization documentation and the SEAR payment. The Rapid Demobilization of FMU and FAA troops is anticipated to take place over teh next 5 months.

Every week some 200 Angolans are maimed or killed in landmine accidents. A delegation from Angola represented by the Government, international and national NGOs, UNICEF, and church groups are attending the Maputo NGO Conference on the total ban of landmines during the week of 22-28 February.
