The Joint Commission (J.C.) met on 27 February at 1630 to discuss the remaining tasks of the Lusaka Protocol, namely the normalization of State administration and demobilization “in situ”. The J.C. also analyzed the report of the Lumbala N’Guimbo and Cazombo incidents.

Yesterday the Joint Commission determined that UNITA is in a position to make a declaration on the status of its demobilization. During a meeting which lasted many hours, the Joint Commission dclared that as of the 27th of February, out of the 7,877 registered UNITA residual soldiers, 5,857 have been demobolized. The remaining ones will be demobolized in the framework of the so-called Open File Mechanism.

The Deputy UN SRSG in Angola, Behrooz Sadry, affirmed yesterday in Luanda that the peace process may come to a positive conclusion in the days to come. Mr. Sadry made the comment during a consultative meeting between the delegations of the Government, UNITA and the Mediation. After having had a meeting with UNITA’s leadership in Andulo on Monday, he said that there are positive prospects concerning to the end of the process.
