Presented at Surviving the Peace: Better Canadian Responses to Post-Conflict Transition Needs in Africa Conference in Ottawa. Angola has failed three times to consolidate successive peace processes. In the last four decades Angola has suffered near-continuous war, large-scale displacements of nearly 4 million people or a third of its population, heavy damage to property and infrastructure, accumulation of a massive war debt and destitution of its people.
Angola Listening Project
The Listening Project (LP) organized a two-week field visit to Angola in November 2006. Catholic Relief Services, Development Workshop, and CARE International collaborated with CDA in arranging for, and carrying out, the field visit of the Listening Project in Angola. Five teams of “listeners,” some composed of an Angolan with an expatriate, and others with only Angolan staff from the participating agencies, visited several regions of Angola during the visit.
Scavenger Study: An Overview of Scavenging in Luanda
In July 1997 Development Workshop carried out a study on scavenging activities in the city of Luanda. The study was performed to gather concrete and accurate information on scavenging activities and to dispel misconceptions. No previous studies of this nature are known. The objective of the study was to identify which items are being scavenged, who is scavenging and under what circumstances, where scavenging is occurring, and what is the life-cycle of the scavenged items.
Basic Service Provision for the Urban Poor – The Experience of DW in Angola
This is one ten case studies that were part of an International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) research programm on “Urban Poverty Reduction Programmes: Lessons of Experience”. This paper describes the water and sanitation programmes that the NGO Development Workshop has developed in Luanda over the last 15 years, working with community organizations, local government and the official water and sanitation agencies.
