President Nelson Mandela has ended a state visit to Angola during which he thanked the government for what he called its unwavering support in the struggle against apartheid. Mr Mandela said relations with Angola had “improved a hundred times” because of his visit. He pledged support for the Angolan ruling party, the MPLA, in the final stages of the country’s peace process.

 

Qual é o significado de eleições em Angola? Parece claro que depois de quase trinta anos de guerra civil, a transição para a democracia constitui um enorme passo na reconstrução do país. O governo da República de Angola anunciou, repetidamente, a intenção de realizar eleições, em breve, mas não estabeleceu data. Ainda assim, e mesmo com os cidadãos já se registando como eleitores, predominam as incertezas sobre o pleito e o seu resultado.

At about midnight on Thursday, the 5th of December DW’s director Allan Cain was en route to Johannesburg when Nelson Mandela’s death was announced on the airport display screens. The following is Allan’s reflection on Mandela’s passing.

I remember the first and only time I saw Nelson Mandela in May 1990. Shortly after being released from prison, he chose to come to Angola as his first trip abroad. Julia and I and our two children Mathieu and Rebecca walked from home, the short distance to Largo 1 de Maio where he as speaking. I told my 9 year old son that this was a historic event that I hoped he would remember. Mandela thanked Angola for the sacrifices that the country made for supporting the ANC’s liberation movement in their fight against the apartheid regime.

UN Habitat Expert Group Meeting on Slum Upgrading Using Participatory and Inclusive Land Readjustment: Defining the Rules of the Game, December 3 to 4, 2013 in Nairobi. The increase in the number of slum dwellers and the proliferation of slums are the reflection of failed or inexistent urban policies. This poses serious challenges to governments and their responsibilities in ensuring the right of their citizens to adequate housing. Participatory and Inclusive Land Readjustment (PILaR) is based on the land value capture theoretical rationale and is one of the new initiatives of UN-Habitat highly supported by the Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos. PILaR aims to promote the supply of serviced urban land through a negotiated process. It is in line with the concet of “planned city extension” that envisages ensuring land supply in a proactive manner, therefore before rapid urbanization turns growing and expanding cities into mega slums. The latter pertains to the prevention dimension of dealing with informal settlements.
