Many national, provincial and local governmental programmes initiated to promote greater economic growth as well as alleviating poverty and unemployment includes, among others, Urban Renewal Projects. The Alexandra Urban Renewal Project (AURP) which is the focus of this study typically concentrates on the elimination of inadequate housing (informal dwellings, backyard shacks, hostels and formal housing in poor conditions) located in critical, life threatening or badly situated locations. It further contributes to the reconstruction and upgrading of the Alexandra Township through building affordable housing, delivering health services, restructuring welfare services, improving safety and security, providing arts, sports and recreational facilities, and preserving heritage precincts.

Lembro-me da primeira e única vez que vi Nelson Mandela, em Maio de 1990. Pouco depois de ser libertado da prisão, ele escolheu para vir a Angola como a sua primeira viagem ao exterior. Minha família e eu andou de casa, a curta distância até Largo 1o de Maio, onde ele estava falando. Eu disse ao meu filho de 9 anos que este era um evento histórico, que eu esperava que ele iria se lembrar. Mandela agradeceu Angola para os sacrifícios que o país fez para apoiar o movimento de libertação do ANC na sua luta contra o regime do apartheid.

Mandela praises improved ties with Angola
President Nelson Mandela has ended a state visit to Angola during which he thanked the government for what he called its unwavering support in the struggle against apartheid. Mr Mandela said relations with Angola had “improved a hundred times” because of his visit. He pledged support for the Angolan ruling party, the MPLA, in the final stages of the country’s peace process.
