Viana’s population grows everyday as people move to Luanda, Angola and the neighboring area to find employment and housing. Viana is one of the fastest-growing regions of Luanda because it still has large amounts of open land. People from other parts of Luanda come here looking for plots. The arrival of new people influences the available housing, physical streetscapes, and residents’ potential physical risks. Rapid growth brings with it challenges such as finding ways to provide schools, health facilities and basic services to a growing population. The Municipal administration, citizens and civil society organizations of Viana are finding ways to meet these challenges and the Viana Atlas shares examples of ways in which urgent needs are being met.
